The Sight and Sounds of Landstuhl

Ahhh Germany aka Deutschland in these parts. Hard to believe but its now been a little over a month since moving to Landstuhl Germany. This small city is situated within the Rhineland-Palatinate, country- side of southwest Germany. The landscape of Landstuhl is mainly hilly. Living here without a car, I have a first hand account of the steepness of the streets; especially the one I bike up to work everyday. The military personnel don’t call it Cardiac Road for nothing. Much of this area is situated within the wooded hills. Its amazing how bike friendly this place is from the riding paths all through the city, to the special bike rakes on the Bahn (train) to the auto free Sundays (a ride and drink festival). Besides maintaining a living state of GREEN, the Germans take their environmental consciousness to another level with 5 types of recycling in each household- plastic, glass, paper, aluminum and compost. So, what does Landstuhl have to offer??? It has its basics. My apartment is situated near, the train station, the downtown area (only one street, really), Landstuhl Medical Regional Center (my work place), the movie theater, Ramstein Air base and a McDonald’s (oh course). Lucky for me the train station is near by so I have the accessible to go visit larger cities such as Kaiserslautern. Landstuhl is very peaceful.

One of the BEST things about this city and Germany as a whole is the numerous castles. Thus far I have seen the Burg Nanstein in Landstuhl, in Heidelberg, the well-known red stone Schloss castle and
a few castles I passed in driving (don’t know the names). Apparently, the castle in the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty is modeled after a castle here in Germany! I hope to check it out at some point. The second greatest things about this area are the SLUGS. These slugs here must be eating moss with steroids. They are HUGE! I don’t know if they have poisonous secretion but I definitely try to avoid stepping on them…they are super juicy haha.
